EDITORIAL #003 :
The word "lockdown" gets used frequently when discussions get going about what is wrong with the legal brothels of Nevada. So too the phrase "pussy prison". What this refers to is the long-held traditional practice of requiring prostitutes to live for extended periods of time at a brothel and limit, often to an extreme, the ability of the lady to leave for short periods of time and then immediately return back to the brothel for work. Sure, they can leave whenever they like, the brothels are not literal prisons (although I do hear some troubling stories about Joe Richards' two brothels) but can the ladies leave the brothel after their shift, go to their home in town and be with their spouse and children like all other people can, and then return for their shift the next day? In general, the answer is a resounding "no".
Why is this? Why are the brothels treating the working girls this way? As with so many other things, it is really difficult to get the legal Nevada brothel industry to speak openly on this (and many other) topics. The reality is that both the legal brothels and the Nevada county law enforcement agencies have the same opinions of legal prostitutes, which is that they don't trust them. The brothels are afraid that their ladies will siphon off the better paying customers to places outside of the brothels and therefore outside of the brothel's fifty percent cut. The counties are afraid that the ladies will start hustling in the local bars and other establishments, working up the ire of the local community which will then demand the shutting down of the brothels and the loss of a stream of revenue, both above and below the board. Therefore the brothels and the counties they operate within collude and collaborate to keep their courtesans locked up and under control. And understand that the working girls themselves have no official channels for representation before law enforcement apart from the brothel owners and management.
I will not insult anyone's intelligence and say that courtesans never do "off-the-books" sessions with customers they first met in a legal brothel. A few (some? many? How would one know?) do. Also, many of them can be found plying their trade, often under the guise of escort work, within the major Nevada cities, particularly Las Vegas. However, just because this happens does not mean that one automatically assumes all working girls break laws and house rules and therefore the way to control the problem is to incarcerate all of them. This is contrary to the values of our country, where you are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty. The brothels and counties know this, yet they continue this despicable and shameful practice. However, there is some light in this room of darkness, and it can be found at an unlikely place, with the much-maligned Dennis Hof.
Although it has been a few years, I've twice had the honor of doing business with a fine woman named "Danny", and that is exactly how she spelled her working name. Danny worked at Hof's Moonlite Bunny Ranch the two sessions I contracted with her, and Danny told me something quite interesting. She worked a regular 12:00 Noon to 8:00 PM shift, five days a week, and did not live at the Moonlite. Danny lived in town locally with her child, and commuted to work every day, showing up at Noon and then leaving and driving back home at night after 8:00 PM. I had never heard of such a thing, and was, and am still, impressed by the willingness of Dennis Hof to allow not just Danny but other working girls as well to do this. I've not heard that he allows his girls at Kitty's to do this, but I know that he allows several at the Moonlite to reside at their private residence and commute daily to work. Least everyone think that I'm a shill for Dennis Hof, all I can say is that you didn't see the editorial I canned about him. Someday I just may publish it, but that will be another day. Today Dennis Hof is to be praised for the respect he bestows on the women who work at his establishment, at least in this one regard.
To be sure, I met ladies at The Mustang Ranch (remember that establishment?) who only worked week-ends there, but lived in town or even out-of-state during week-days. This is a far cry from the time that The Mustang Ranch insisted that ladies work there for three weeks straight. If even the now-history Mustang Ranch could lighten up, then so too can the other legal brothels in the grand state of Nevada.
Some of the brothels claim they can't, by law, let the working girls go home after shift. For many brothels this is just another lie, although in the case of the Nye County brothels they do have this law, "Every prostitute who is off the brothel premises in excess of twenty-four hours shall be subject to all the medical testing requirements set forth in this chapter and any other applicable state laws and regulations;". How convenient for the brothels, not having to defend their decision by passing responsibility on up to the county. I will point out here that this wrongful law is given in the context of protecting the public health, but there is no real medical reason why after only 24 hours of being away from the brothel the prostitute must be re-tested. That is just a cover for the real reason for not letting legal prostitutes commute to work the way all other citizens can. And I might add that I've never gotten a clear signal as to whether legal prostitutes that work in the Nye County brothels can actually live locally in Nye County. The working girls say that their brothel tells them that Nye County won't let them work in the legal brothels if they live locally, although there are no actual Nye County laws to that effect.
It is time that the brothels and law enforcement make pussy prisons illegal. Not only should that Nye County law be overturned, but a Nevada State law should be enacted forcing the legal brothels to allow prostitutes to go home after their shift is over should they so desire. Geoff Arnold and Jessi Winchester should join forces and do the right thing and work to bring some honor to this industry. There is no reason why they can not do this, it only takes the will to introduce the legislation.
Be seeing you.
