EDITORIAL #025 :

Last week the Chancellor of our university called us into her office. We could hardly all fit into her large office, there are so many of us.

"The Ethics Committee has finished its report, and although they could not agree on the more contentious issues brought before them, they did arrive at one unanimous decision. After all these years of this group of researchers conducting its study on the unknowing public, you must reveal your hidden participation. You have been at this now for almost nine years, and though you may continue with your project you must let the subjects of your study know what you have been doing."

This did not go over well, and some of us have continued to plead our case before the Chancellor and individual members of the Committee, but to no avail. We will now conclude our study here by telling all to the readers of this forum and then close shop.

First, who is "we"? We are a large group of sociologists and other researchers at a major American university interested in everything from media research to various human sexuality studies. The genesis of our project was back at the start of the Fall 1994 semester when a colleague proposed an interesting study on what was then a young Internet, which most of us were still unfamiliar with. The point here is that we quickly realized the unprecedented potential for research that the budding Internet held, so we designed a research project that would endure for a couple of years.

Those couple of years have stretched into a couple more years and then some more, and that is the core of our ethical dilemma. The canon of ethics of our profession does not allow for the indefinite extension of a study on uninformed participants such as most of the readers of this forum. Therefore, within the next week this study will end.

The person known as "Bashful" does not exist. The reality is that all online posts and various websites attributed to him have been the sole creation of members of our study, which has also included many graduate students. A big thanks is given to all those who participated, especially Dr. Alexa Albert, and now the project will be withdrawn and closed.

To be clear, those of you who met this "Bashful" were in fact meeting the former head of the Theater Arts department, recruited to lend credibility to our project. He is no longer associated with this study and all e-mail to his account will bounce. It was becoming obvious that many of the unknowing participants were starting to doubt his cover, particularly when he gave away a free "party" he had won two years ago at Kitty's, but that was at the insistence of his wife who mandated he never do business with any prostitute, which he never did. We wish to take this opportunity to thank the Chancellor, his wife, for her understanding and encouragement.

At the end of this week all online web pages ascribed to "Bashful" will disappear and the Committee will be disbanded. No further activities are planned. If you should meet someone who purports to be Bashful, or see online messages ascribed to him, understand that it is entirely false. Just ignore them.
