EDITORIAL #032-033-034 :
This LPIN review is for a three-week period since I went on a two-week vacation. It was a good vacation, but a little weird. My old roommate of thirteen years ago pepper sprayed my old college chum of twenty-one years ago.
They used to be good friends but in recent years have fought over things both big and small. I made this trip to visit both of them, and stayed at the new home of my old roommate. When my old college chum showed up the two of them immediately started talking about conducting a pepper spray experiment - they would stand five or six feet apart and my old roommate would spray pepper spray directly in the face of my old college chum for two seconds. They wanted me to referee the test.
I told them they were crazy and that, on principle, I refuse to have anything to do with their stupid test. They had discussed this for months in e-mail messages which I'd received, but I'd figured it was just BS. They were serious. My old college chum sat me down and told me that it was no big deal - he had been pepper sprayed before and he could easily handle it again. I relented.
We assembled in the back yard and I counted out "one-thousand one, one-thousand two". My old college chum's face and chest were plastered with a red foam. He never yelled out in pain, which was, of course, the point of the test. He wanted to prove that he was tough. Personally, I think he is nuts, but this is what he wanted and it is exactly what he got. Later I learned he had years ago mildly sprayed himself with a small dosage of pepper spray, and on the basis of that figured pepper spray was nothing to worry about.
My old college chum washed his eyes at the outdoor water faucet and then my old roommate and I led him inside where he washed his eyes some more at the kitchen sink and then sat down to rest and recuperate. It was a full hour before he could open his eyes at all, another half hour before he could take a good look around, and a full two hours after the spraying that his normal vision returned with no pain or other after-effects.
Pepper spray is not to be confused with tear gas or mace. Click here to read a FAQ on pepper spray. Pepper spray is just simple Cayenne pepper, mixed with a solvent and some propulsive gasses to make it spray. My friend had pepper spray all over him and I got it on my hands while I led him back into the house. I washed my hands thoroughly with soap and water and seemed to get all of the pepper spray off of them, but later I absentmindedly rubbed my left eye with my index finger and went blind in my left eye for half an hour. It was the same sensation I've had before from cutting jalapenos and rubbing my eyes. That pepper spray lingers for a long time, and contaminates everything that comes in contact with it.
After regaining his eyesight two hours after being pepper sprayed, my old college chum took a shower to remove the spray from everywhere else on his face and body, and then went blind again as he let the shower water wash more pepper spray back into his eyes. Pepper spray is nasty stuff that lingers on if you are not careful. It took several showers for my buddy to rid himself of all pepper spray.
The funny thing is that for the first few hours after the pepper spraying event, my two old friends got along just fine and did the male bonding thing bigtime. It drew them closer. However, eventually old problems resurfaced and things got bad, unrelated to the pepper spraying. It sorta defies description what all then happened but I'll say that it was a wild trip with the pepper spraying being only a minor point!
Nevertheless, I strongly recommend that you not pepper spray your friends, even if they want you to. Let them do it themselves if they want it done.
Be seeing you.
