EDITORIAL #040 :
Last month (August) I was visiting my old roomate, and he tried to get me interested in getting involved online with a Yahoo! personals account like he has. He recommends it highly, and apparently finds some interesting dates and many not-so-interesting ones, too, through the service. I told him I was not interested, and could never see myself going through a dating service, online or otherwise. But then it struck me - I've been involved with a dating service since that visit I made to The Mustang Ranch in early May 1986. Well, okay, a dating service of sorts.
Aye, there's the rub. "of sorts". Visiting a brothel is not, of course, the same as trying to meet women through a dating service, as I am the first to admit even though I've never used a dating service and probably never will. A prostitute is a human being who deserves the same respect that any other human being deserves, and they all deserve a lot, but she is not your girl friend so don't treat her like she is. However, that all said, there are some really interesting and non-trivial parallels between a brothel and a dating service. In the interest of keeping this editorial short I'll not list any of those similarities but will say that you don't have to have much imagination to think them up.
And the similarities are more than some guy's search for a slotted hole to stick his round peg into. Visiting prostitutes fulfills emotional needs for guys like me. Please don't ask me what those emotional needs are since I don't particularly know, but I can sure tell when they get fulfilled and I have a lot of friends who read this weekly LPIN summary who have the same emotional needs and seek fulfillment in the same places I do.
I suspect that the same is true of guys who subscribe to dating services. They are also looking to fulfill many (most?) of the same emotional needs that I and my friends are trying to fulfill. That is why a dating service is like a brothel. Of sorts.
Be seeing you.
