How to get to Elko County by Air

If you have your own private aircraft (or have access to one), you can fly directly into EKO, or (if your plane isn't too big) into Wells' small Harriet Field (Airport Code: LWL), which is located just east of U.S. 95, about 2 miles east-northeast of town (no rental cars available here though). To the best of my knowledge and research, Carlin does not currently have an active, public-use airport.

How to get to Elko County from points to the North

• Option 1
  • Get to Twin Falls, ID, then take U.S. 93 South to your I-80 Elko County brothels "gateway point" at Wells.
• Option 2
  • Get to Mountain Home, ID, then take Idaho S.R. 51 South (which becomes Nevada S.R. 225 at the state line) and proceed to your I-80 Elko County brothels "gateway point" at Elko.

How to get to Elko County from points to the South

As an alternative, you can use U.S. 50 West from Ely to Eureka, then take Nevada 278 North to the alternate I-80 Elko County brothels "gateway point" at Carlin (you will directly pass both Carlin brothels before reaching I-80 on this route).

How to get to Elko County from points East

From Central Utah, get to Delta, UT then take U.S. 6/U.S. 50 west to Ely, NV. From there, take U.S. 93 north to the eastern "gateway point" in Wells, or to reach the western "gateway" you can take U.S. 50 west to Eureka, then NV 278 north to Carlin. From either gateway city, Wells or Carlin, you can then take I-80 to Elko (or beyond to the opposite gateway city).

How to get to Elko County from points West

• From north central Nevada (Battle Mountain & Winnemucca), and all points further west (Reno & northern California) take I-80 East to Carlin.
• From Carson City, take either U.S. 395 North to I-80 in Reno, or take U.S. 50 East to Alternate U.S. 95 North at Silver Springs, then Alt 95 to I-80 at Fernley. In either case, once on I-80 East, proceed to Carlin.
• From southeastern Oregon, get to Burns Junction, OR. Once there, take U.S. 95 South to I-80 at Winnemucca, then I-80 West to Carlin.

Carlin-area:
The town of Carlin (population about 2,200), located at the western end of Interstate 80's run through Elko County (about 22 miles west of the city of Elko), is home to two legal brothels. Just east of town, I-80 passes through the Carlin Tunnels, suprisingly one of only three highway tunnel complexes in the very mountainous state of Nevada (the other two being the Cave Rock tunnels on U.S. 50 at Lake Tahoe and the Paradise Rd Airport Spur Connector under the south set of runways and taxiways at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas). Since both brothels are located on the southwestern outskirts of town, along Nevada S.R. 278, they have plenty of room for parking and accomodate the needs of truckers quite well. One note, due to the fact that the exit for Highway 278 (Exit #279) is only a partial one (half-diamond), westbound motorists on I-80 must use one of the other two Carlin exits and proceed through town to get to the brothels (and those leaving and wishing to go east on I-80 must do the same).

Local Directions to Carlin Brothels:

While both brothels in Carlin are located on Nevada S.R. 278 on the southwest side of town, they can be a little tricky to get to and from, due the the fact that two of the three exits on I-80 at Carlin are only partial ones (half-diamonds). So if you want to continue your travels on I-80 in the same direction, you may have to take a different route out of town than you did inbound. Therefore, I've included directions both to and from I-80 in each direction.

If you happen to be coming north on 278 from Eureka, you will pass both brothels BEFORE you reach I-80. Just keep a sharp eye out for them once you cross the Humboldt River. The Dovetail will be on your left, just past the river and subsequent railroad tracks; Sharon's will be on the right about 1/4 mile past the intersection with Bush Street (which leads into the center of town).

• Simplist route TO the Carlin brothels (from I-80):
      From eastbound I-80:
          Take the first (West) Carlin exit, #279: Nevada 278 South, and turn right (south) at the bottom of the ramp. Continue straight past the adjacent intersection with Nevada 221 (Chestnut Street - Historic U.S. 40), toward Eureka, and you will encounter Sharon's Brothel & Bar on the left side of the road in a little less than a mile. One quater mile later, just past the intersection with Bush Street, you'll find the Dovetail Ranch located on the right side of the highway. If you cross the railroad tracks or the Humboldt River, you've gone too far! Since exit 279 is only a half-diamond, to return to eastbound I-80, you'll have to go thru town (see "from" instructions below). Otherwise, just reverse the above directions to head west on I-80.
      From westbound I-80:
          Take the first (East) Carlin exit, #282: Nevada 221 West and turn left at the end of the ramp. Within a quarter of a mile, you will continue to follow this state highway as it turns right (west) onto Old U.S. 40 (Chestnut Street - a/k/a Business Loop 80, though it may not be signed as such). Follow NV 221 through town, a litle less than 3 miles, to its terminus at Nevada 278, just south of I-80's exit 279. Turn left (south) on NV 278 and follow it to Sharon's Brothel & Bar (a little less than a mile on the left) or to the Dovetail Ranch (a little over a mile on the right, just past the intersection with Bush Street). Since exit 282 is only a half-diamond, to return to westbound I-80, you'll cannot simply reverse the route you used to get to the brothels (see "from" instructions below).

• Route that works both TO and FROM the Carlin brothels (when using I-80):
          Use the second (main) Carlin exit, #280: Nevada 766, and turn south (right from eastbound I-80; left from westbound) at the bottom of the ramp. Less than one-half mile later, the state highway ends at Nevada 221 (Chestnut Street - Historic U.S. 40 & Business Loop 80). Though you can also take that road west to Nevada 278, continue straight here (on 10th Street) for one more block, to the intersection with Bush Street. Turn right (southwest) at Bush and take it about a mile and a half to NV 278, where you'll turn right for Sharon's Brothel & Bar (less than a quarter of a mile on the right) or left to get to the Dovetail Ranch (which is just beyond the intersection and to the right). When leaving, simply reverse this route (though if you're heading westbound, the route described in the "from" section below is much shorter).

• Simplist route FROM the Carlin brothels (back to I-80):
      To eastbound I-80:
          Use Bush Street into town (from the Dovetail, turn left onto NV 278 North then immediately turn right onto Bush; from Sharon's, turn left onto NV 278 South then turn left again about one quarter mile later at Bush). Once on Bush, proceed northest to 10th Street, where you should turn left (north). One block later, 10th Street becomes Nevada 766 North, then about one half mile later you encounter the traffic interchange at I-80. Turn right there, onto the eastbound I-80 entrance ramp. If you somehow miss the left turn at 10th Street, don't panic! Keep going until Bush Street ends at Chestnut Street (NV 221), where you should merge onto onto eastbound Chestnut, then proceed about another mile to a well-marked left turn that will lead you to the East Carlin (half-diamond) traffic interchange. Just before the freeway underpass, turn right onto the entrance ramp for I-80 eastbound.
      To westbound I-80:
          Take Nevada 278 North (from the Dovetail, turn left; from Sharon's, turn right). Continue about a mile, past the intersection at Chestnut Street (which was old U.S. 40 and is the current western terminus of NV 221), to the West Carlin (half-diamond) traffic interchange (the northern terminus of NV 278). Immediately after passing under the freeway, turn left onto the entrance ramp for I-80 westbound.

Look for the structure that resembles a log cabin along the west side of the highway just south of the intersection with Bush Street. The Dovetail reopened under new ownership in January 2002, but was closed once again by June 2006. In late January of 2008 it reopened for business, marking the return of brothel competition in Carlin. That spring, the house was totally renovated and the popular Tempting Tiffany, who had previously worked as a courtesan at several houses around the state, was named as its general manager. By the end of 2008; however, it was reported that she no longer works there.

Sharon's is housed in a white, modular structure with dark brown trim, which can be found on the east side of Nevada 278, a couple blocks north of its intersection with Bush Street.

*Note: Nevada DOT has decommissioned sections of Nevada 535 (Idaho St.) within the city of Elko, except for the portion between Nevada 225 (Mountain City Rd. at Silver St.) and Nevada 227 (5th Street) and the areas around the I-80 interchanges (exits 298 and 303). Signage may vary.

Local Directions to Elko Brothels:

• Easiest (main) approach:
      From either direction on I-80, take exit #301 (Nevada S.R. 225) and turn to the southeast (right if you were eastbound; left if you were westbound) at the bottom of the ramp. You will now be on NV 225 South (Mountain City Road) and should see the Elko Regional Airport on your right. Keep going straight at the traffic signal just past the airport at Idaho Street (the southern terminus of NV 225) and on into town, now on Silver Street. About 3/4 mile past the stoplight, after Silver curves to the east-northeast, take a right on 3rd Street (at The Star Restaurant). You will see the four of the five brothels in the next two blocks, with the fifth just around the corner on Douglas. As mentioned elsewhere, trucks and other large vehicles can be parked about a block further south, along the railroad tracks paralleling Water Street (where 3rd Street ends).

• Alternate approaches:
      From eastbound I-80:
          Take exit #298 (Business Loop 80 - Historic U.S. 40 - former Nevada S.R. 535 East) and turn right onto Idaho Street. Follow it, as it parallels the main runway at the Elko Regional Airport, to the signalized intersection at Nevada S.R. 225 North (Mountain City Rd.) & Silver Street. Turn right onto Silver and then follow it as it curves to the east-northeast, about 3/4 mile to 3rd Street. Take a right onto 3rd (at The Star Restaurant) and the brothel district will be directly ahead in the next few blocks.
      From westbound I-80:
          Take exit #303 (Business Loop 80 - former Nevada S.R. 535 West) and turn left at the bottom of the ramp. A little more than a tenth of a mile later, you will turn left at Idaho Street (Historic U.S. 40) and follow it southwest into town. Just past the Elko County Courthouse, you will see the northern terminus of Nevada S.R. 227 (at 5th Street). Two blocks later, turn left onto 3rd Street and proceed southeast a few blocks to Elko's brothel district. If you miss this left turn at 3rd, don't panic! Just remain on Idaho Street until you reach the stoplight at NV 225 (by the airport), turning left there onto Silver Street. Then proceed on Silver as it curves to the east-northeast, about 3/4 mile back to 3rd Street, where you then turn right (at The Star Restaurant) and the brothel district will be directly ahead in the next few blocks.

Unlike "The Line" in Winnemucca, the brothel district in Elko doesn't have a catchy name. Also, unlike most all of the other Nevada towns that have multiple cathouses (which are generally found in industrial districts), those here are in a mixed-use neighborhood which includes private residences. And since none of Elko's "urban" brothels have a dedicated parking lot, with the exception of Inez's, on-street parking is the rule here. Trucks and larger vehicles may be parked a block or two away, along the railroad tracks paralleling Water Street.

A one-story structure surrounded by a white picket fence, this brothel and bar's roofline is trimmed by red neon lights. Reportedly, the "D & D" in this establishment's name stands for "Dancing & Diddling" - a fact now confirmed by their building's present sign, which recently replaced an older one above a bush near its main entrance. Inez's courtesans are all ladies of Asian heritage, and the house has a "fixed price menu". More recently, Inez's has established an Internet presence with the debut of their own website, which was completely relaunched in mid-February 2007. Unlike its nearby competitors, it is reported that Inez's does indeed have a small parking lot, located to the right side of their building. While it cannot handle big rigs, it can accomodate several cars.

Mona's Ranch

Mona's is located in a two-story structure with a red sign at a corner of the building. Formerly a yellowish-sand color, the brothel has since been repainted a bright "lemon yellow" with black trim. Do not confuse this establishment with the former Mona Lisa Ranch (also f/k/a CharDon's Club, and the site of the original Mona's Ranch), which is now called the No. 1 Geisha and is located around the corner on Douglas Street. During one stretch of time, these two establishments shared common ownership (by a lady named Mona, hence the similar names), but no longer do. Before the Mona's Ranch name was transfered to this building, it was known as Mona's II. The current proprietor of this brothel is believed to be James Walker. Recent rumours have Mona being back involved with the operation, but these have yet to be independently confirmed. As of mid-July 2006, Mona's website said that their current operating hours were 12 Noon until 4 A.M. in the morning (best to call ahead for more current information).

The No. 1 Geisha was housed in a gray colored building with pink trim on Douglas Street, just around the corner from its three nearby competitors. Their pink sign (now replaced) once had a small red light on top and a larger streetlight-style lamp protruding from the front. This house closed sometime during 2011.

In January 2006, it was reported that the current owner had been charged with certain violations of brothel regulations, so the operating status of this house was at that time up in the air. By June 2006, that situation had been resolved and the brothel was once again open for business. Additional legal troubles for the owners were reported during the summer of 2010, but as of January 2011 they had not resulted in this house's closure or sale. However, the house was eventually closed sometime later in 2011. Its future status is up in the air.

Originally, this building was the site of Mona's Ranch. Later, Mona opened a second brothel at 103 S. 3rd Street, which at that time went by the name of Mona's II. At some later date, her original brothel on Douglas Street was sold and/or renamed as The Mona Lisa Ranch, with the Mona's Ranch moniker transfering over to what had been Mona's II.

Between 1996 and 2003, this establishment was known as CharDon's Club (after its then-owner's first names) but reverted to its long-time name, The Mona Lisa Ranch, when it was sold. Since then, it has changed hands again, and in the Fall of 2005 was rechristened by its present owners as The No. 1 Geisha.

Located just south of Inez's, PJ's Lucky Strike has been closed for quite a long time now. However, its brothel licence remains active, having been renewed annually. But in the Summer of 2010, it appears that this house may soon reopen for business. Reports have Sandy, the owner, fixing up the place for a potential rebirth. Stay tuned for further information as is becomes available.

The building housing Sue's used to be identified by the off-white brick exterior on its first floor and wine colored, wooden second story. Both floors had turquoise blue trim. As of mid-2010, it has been reported that the entire building has been repainted white, with dark green trim. There is, of course, a large sign over its main entrance. Sue's established a website in late May 2006, and had a new phone number as of that date.

Local Directions to Wells Brothels:

From eastbound Interstate 80:

• Take exit 351, then turn left (north) onto Humboldt Avenue (Nevada S.R. 223) at bottom of ramp;
• Proceed approximately 1 mile on Humboldt Ave, which curves northeast, to Sixth Street;
• Remain on S.R. 223 as it turns right (southeast) onto Sixth St;
• Proceed three blocks (approx. 0.3 miles) to Lake Street;
• Turn left (northeast) onto Lake St;
• Proceed on Lake St for four blocks (approx. 0.26 miles), crossing the railroad tracks, to where Lake St ends at Tenth Street;
• Curve right (southeast) onto Tenth Street;
• After Tenth St jogs slightly, you can turn right (about 0.2 miles from Lake) onto a road leading to Eighth Street and Bella's parking lot, or remain on Tenth for another block (0.08 mile) before turning right (about 0.28 miles from Lake) onto a road that runs between Bella's (on the right) and Donna's (on the left).

From westbound Interstate 80:

• Alternative One:
  • Take exit 352B, whose ramp deposits you directly onto Old U.S. 40 (heading west-northwest);
  • Proceed approximately 0.5 mile to a 4-Way STOP at U.S. 93;
  • Turn right (north-northeast) onto northbound U.S. 93 at this 4-Way STOP;
• Alternative Two:
  • Take exit 352A, then turn right (north-northeast) onto U.S. Highway 93 at bottom of ramp;
  • Proceed approximately 0.14 mile to the 4-Way STOP at Old U.S. 40;
  • Continue straight on northbound U.S. 93 at the 4-Way STOP;
• From the 4-Way STOP, northbound U.S. 93 soon curves slightly to the right (northeast) and bridges over a railroad mainline;
• Proceed approximately 0.25 miles past that bridge to Hacienda Ranch Road (there is a recently-built Truck Wash located on the southwest corner of this intersection);
• Turn left (northwest) onto the unpaved Hacienda Ranch Rd;
• Proceed on Hacienda Ranch Rd as it winds its way for about 0.6 miles to a point south of Donna's parking lot, where it becomes Eighth Street; Bella's is just a few feet beyond.

From southbound U.S. 93:

• Alternative One:
  • Turn right at the intersection marked for the Wells Airport (Harriett Field). This will be the opposite direction of the arrow indicating the way to the airfield.
  • Immediately bear left (southeast) after turning off of U.S. 93, this will put you on Tenth Street which then curves to the right and heads west toward town;
  • Proceed west on the unpaved Tenth Street, after about 0.6 miles the road will curve right (northeast);
  • About one block (0.08 mile) past this curve, turn left (southwest) onto the road running between Donna's (on the left) and Bella's (on the right); or continue another block (0.08 mile) before turning left (southwest) on a road leading directly to Eighth Street and Bella's parking lot.
• Alternative Two:
  • Approximately one-half mile south of the turnoff for the Wells Airport (Harriett Field), turn right (northwest) onto the unpaved Hacienda Ranch Road (there is a recently-built Truck Wash located on the southwest corner of this intersection, just past the turn);
  • Proceed on Hacienda Ranch Rd as it winds its way for about 0.6 miles to a point south of Donna's parking lot, where it becomes Eighth Street; Bella's is just a few feet beyond.

From northbound U.S. 93:

• Remain on northbound U.S. 93, as it passes under Interstate 80;
• About 0.14 north of the ramps from/to westbound I-80, a 4-Way STOP is encountered at Old U.S. Highway 40;
• Proceed straight at this 4-Way STOP, remaining on northbound U.S. 93, which very soon thereafter curves slightly to the right (northeast) and bridges over a railroad mainline;
• Continue approximately 0.25 miles past that bridge to Hacienda Ranch Road (there is a recently-built Truck Wash located on the southwest corner of this intersection);
• Turn left (northwest) here onto the unpaved Hacienda Ranch Rd;

Originally known as the Hacienda Ranch and later as Bella's Hacienda, Bella's has been owned and operated by a lady named Bella Shauna Cummins since 1981. During the late 1990s, Bella was instrumental in the construction of Hacienda Ranch Road, which now connects the brothel (and incidentally, her nearby competitor Donna's Ranch), directly to U.S. 93 east of town. This unpaved road allows partons to avoid having to cross the busy tracks of the Union Pacific Railroad at-grade in order to reach the brothels. According to their website, Bella's now offers a unique "Bed & Breakfast" accommodation plan for those desiring to spend the night in Wells.

This is the original Donna's Ranch - foa a period of time they also owned another brothel located in the north-central Nevada town of Battle Mountain. The original Donna's here in Wells can be found just a few feet away from their local competitor, Bella's. Both of these brothels are about 100 yards away from the former Southern Pacific mainline, which is now ownend and operated by its former bitter rival, the Union Pacific. Donna's is housed in a conglomeration of historic buildings, parts of which were once relocated here from the former local railroad passenger station when it closed in 1967. A very interesting history of both the area and their structures can be found on the Donna's Ranch website.
