"Speed Racer's" Driving Directions to Nevada's Legal Brothels

Main Page Road Project Info Southern NV

The intent of this page is to provide information about the major highway construction and improvement projects in Southern Nevada that affect patrons travelling to the state's legal brothels. It is by no means a complete list off all major highway projects in this area of the Silver State, nor will it be updated with every little detail. But it will give you an overview of those projects listed, an estimate of their potential impact on your travel time, and any alternate routes available, where applicable.

Southern Nevada Projects Outside Metro Las Vegas:

Notes: Not all road construction projects are included in this list, just the ones most likely to cause major delays on routes frequently used by area residents and visitors, especially those heading for Southern Nevada's legal brothels. While some of the projects listed below also spill over into portions of the Las Vegas metro area (especially in the Boulder City vicinity), they primarily affect rural regions of southern Nevada.

Main Page Road Project Info Southern NV Rural Projects Hoover Dam Bypass

W20-1 Sign U.S. 93: Hoover Dam Bypass Project:

Click on above logo to go to the official project website

Upon its completion in late 2010, this project will have replaced the narrow, curvy path of U.S. 93 on either side of and across Hoover Dam with a modern, 4-lane divided highway. This improvement will remove the major bottleneck for traffic between Las Vegas and Phoenix, as well as to and from many other points in Arizona and the Southwest. It will also enhance the experience for those visiting the monumental engineering achievement which is Hoover Dam by removing the heavy and ever-increasing volume of through traffic on U.S. 93.

The new route will cross the Colorado River about 1600 feet downstream from the historic dam on a spectacular composite arch bridge now being built to span Black Canyon. Phases 1 (the Arizona approach) and 2 (the Nevada Approach) have been completed, except for final pavement and signage, but do now allow the contractors much better access to the canyon for Phase 3 work - construction of the main bridge. For further details, please see the project's excellent website, which features many construction photos and a live webcam feed of the bridge work now in progress.

Please note that a early-September 2006 windstorm destroyed the towers for the cableway which was being used to construct the Colorado River bridge across Black Canyon. This accident has pushed back the final completion of this project by at least a year, to late 2010. But thankfully, no one was injured in the collapse of the temporary cableway.

Now that the new approaches have been completed, and the wreckage of the temporary cableway cleared, there should be no more construction-related delays to travelers on the current route of U.S. 93. But still, be aware of those potential delays traditionally experienced due to the heavy volume of pedestrian and vehicular traffic generated by the dam's visitors and sightseers. Also, look out for construction vehicles entering and leaving the site at the new tie-ins with the existing roadway on either end of the project.

Also, be aware that post-2001 restrictions due to security concerns at Hoover Dam remain in place. This has one positive benefit - most all non-local truck traffic must continue to detour around the dam (using I-40 and U.S. 95) until this new bypass is opened. This has eased congestion somewhat, especially on U.S. 93 in Arizona between Kingman and the Dam, and mostly eliminated the problem of large trucks slowly navigating the steep grades and narrow turns of the existing dam approaches in both states. However, you still may encounter some large and slow-moving vehicles from the construction contractors, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (which runs the dam itself), and certain local rock-haulers. So please be patient, alert, courteous, and safe when driving!

U.S. 93: Boulder City Bypass Project

Click on above logo to go to the corridor study website

The Boulder City Bypass project will eventually result in a 4-lane divided highway route for U.S. 93 traffic bound for Hoover Dam and points beyond which will eliminate the need for through traffic to pass through densly developed areas of Boulder City. It will also "fill in the gap" between the end of I-515 (at the Foothills Drive overpass in Henderson) and the start point of the Hoover Dam Bypass near the Hacienda Hotel/Casino between Boulder City & Lake Mead.

While the route for this bypass has been selected, the current status of funding for the final design and construction of this project remains in flux. It was hoped that it could be completed by the time the Hoover Dam Bypass was originally scheduled be open to traffic in late 2008, but now this will definitely not happen, nor is it likely to be ready by the the revised HDB completion date in 2010. According to a January 10, 2006 article in the Las Vegas Sun , a Nevada state transportation official has said it may be up to 20 years before this 10-mile freeway bypassing Boulder City can be completed. This is indeed bad news for the residents of that quiet city, especially since the interstate truck traffic that has not passed through the center of their town since late 2001 (when the security restrictions at Hoover Dam were implemented) will return with a vengence in late 2010 upon opening of the new Colorado River bridge.
