"Speed Racer's" Driving Directions to Nevada's Legal Brothels

Main Page Southern NV Beatty-area Brothel (Angel's Ladies):

Located about two hours northwest of Las Vegas, the small town of Beatty is home to one very unique brothel, Angel's Ladies, which as of Fall 2007 is currently temporarily CLOSED pending its sale to another new owner. The town also serves as the southern gateway to two additional rural brothels further north toward Tonopah along U.S. 95, the Shady Lady and the (currently closed) Cottontail Ranch, which are both detailed on this separate page.

Beatty-area:

Angel's Ladies Beatty, NV and Vicinity Beatty is a quiet town of about 1,200 people located about halfway along U.S. 95's trek through southern Nye County. A gateway to the nearby Death Valley National Park in California, the town has several small motels, a few restaurants, a couple of gambling spots, and one legal brothel. When travelling northwest on U.S. 95 from Las Vegas, it is the only the second town of significant size along that road, and the first since Indian Springs, over 70 miles to the east-southeast. Beatty may be poised for future growth if construction of the controversial Nucular Waste Repository at nearby Yucca Mountain (on the Nevada Test Site) proceeds as proposed.

Historical Note:
This house was previously known as the Fran's Star Ranch, a name still seen on aeronautical charts due to its abandoned runway.

On U.S. 95, about 3 miles north of its junction with NV 374 in the center of Beatty, Angel's Ladies brothel lies at the end of a short (about three city blocks long) dirt entrance road that actually spans the Amargosa River (not much more than a dry wash most of the year around here) and connects it to the highway. The turnoff is identified by a sign as well as an old, crashed Beechcraft airplane, indicative of the fact that you also will cross a once-active (dirt) landing strip located on the property (listed on aeronautical charts under the brothel's former name: Fran's Star Ranch).

Located in a pink building on the west side of the U.S. 95, Angel's also has a large parking and turnaround area for big-rigs, and features a swimming pool fed by a natural hot spring located on their scenic, 77-acre property in the appropriately named Oasis Valley. Skinny-dipping and nude frolicking is the rule during the warm weather months at this pool. Angel's Ladies also has a nicely frunished VIP trailer to the rear of the main house for extended parties. The friendly, relaxed atmosphere here makes this brothel a very popular place in spite of it's more remote location relative to Las Vegas and the fact that it's license currently only permits a maximum of five ladies to be working at any given time.

Having decided to retire, long-time owners Mack and Angel Moore had their business on the market for some time. On Septemeber 6, 2005, the Nye County Commissioners approved their sale of this brothel to a group known as JBJ Ranch, Inc. Those owners retained the Angel's Ladies name and began to make various improvements over time to the property, including a new roof on the main building, new carpeting, and interior decor. Contrary to prior rumors, the famous spring-fed pool on the property was included in the sale and the new owners planed to improve both it and its surroundings for the summer of 2007. They have also overhauled this brothel's website, and upgraded e-mail access for their ladies. But since web access at the brothel is dependent on an often unreliable satellite connection, they were sometimes be slow in responding to e-mails.

In the fall of 2007, JBJ Ranch, Inc. hit hard times and closed Angel's Ladies brothel on September 20, 2007 after deciding not to spend the money for a 4th quarter operating permit form Nye County. Subsequent rumours had the property and brothel license being sold to the owners of the Pussycat family of brothels in Winnemucca. This speculation turned out to be untrue. Another rumour had is being converted to an all-Asian lady house, similar to Inez's of Elko. Still another had former propriator Mack Moore getting back in to the ownership picture, but reportedly he balked at a deal once the house was closed.

At this point, whatever the future may hold for this small brothel on the north side of Beatty, only time will tell.

Detailed directions: Las Vegas to Beatty (two alternatives)

You have two, equally viable options from most areas in the Las Vegas metropolitan area: the Northern (U.S. 95) Route or the Southern (via Pahrump) Route.

(1) Northern Route:
(1:1) Get to U.S. 95 North as follows:
  • From most central parts of town (including "The Strip"), take I-15 North (or in a very few cases, I-15 South) to downtown's "spaghetti junction" interchange (exit #42) and use the ramp for U.S. 95 North (Tonopah), also known as the Oran K. Gragson Freeway.
  • From most of Henderson or other eastern parts of metro Las Vegas (including Boulder City), use I-515 North, which continues as U.S. 95 North (Gragson Fwy) past the "spaghetti junction" interchange (exit #76) at I-15.
  • From western parts of Henderson, use I-215 West to exit #10A: I-15 North (Las Vegas). Proceed on I-15 North to the "spaghetti junction" interchange (exit #42) and then take the ramp for U.S. 95 North (Tonopah), also known as the Oran K. Gragson Freeway.
  • From western parts of metro Las Vegas (including Summerlin), take your best local route to U.S. 95 North.
  • From most of North Las Vegas, take your best local route to U.S. 95 North.
  • From Nellis Air Force Base and nearby areas, take I-15 North to the Las Vegas Beltway (Clark County 215) at exit #51. Then proceed on the Beltway west to U.S. 95 North.
  • From any points northeast of Las Vegas Motor Speedway, take I-15 South to the Las Vegas Beltway (Clark County 215) at exit #51. Then proceed on the Beltway west to U.S. 95 North.
(1:2) Continue northbound on U.S. 95, past the roads to Mt. Charleston (NV 157 & NV 156), through the tiny town of Indian Springs, past the Clark - Nye County border, the turnoffs for Mercury (access point for the Nevada Test Site), NV 160 (to Pahrump), and NV 373 (in Amargosa Valley), all the way to the town of Beatty - a total of 115.16 miles from I-15 in downtown Las Vegas (or around 103.24 miles from the new Beltway interchange on the northwest side of town).
(1:3) Follow U.S. 95 through Beatty (one right turn required). The entrance to Angel's Ladies is located on the west side of the road, just beyond the town limits, at the wrecked airplane (3.03 miles past the right turn). Proceed another 0.25 mile to the parking lot outside of the main building.

(2) Southern (via Pahrump) Route:

(2:1) Get on I-15 southbound (toward Los Angeles) and proceed to exit #33: Blue Diamond Road (NV 160 - Pahrump) on the south side of Las Vegas, where you will exit the freeway. The first stoplight you will encounter (west of those for other ramps at this exit) is at Industrial Road, just past the Silverton Hotel on your left. Stay in the right lane on the freeway exit ramp to merge directly onto west-southwest-bound Blue Diamond Road, but immediately past that merge (reverse gore) point, you must move one lane to your left to get into the through lane of Nevada 160 (since your lane from the exit becomes a "must turn right" onto northbound Industrial Road at this stoplight, a mere one block later). See the special note about NV 160 road construction below.
(2:2) Remain on NV 160 West when Blue Diamond Road splits off as NV 159 (to its namesake town & mine). From that point on, highway 160 is the Pahrump Valley Highway, on which you will proceed over Mountain Springs Summit, and remain on it all the way through the rapidly-growing town of Pahrump, to its western terminus at a rural T-interstction with U.S. 95 - a total of 79.38 miles from that that traffic signal back at Industrial Road (or 76.01 from the stoplight at Rainbow Blvd.).
(2:3) Turn left (west at this junction) to take U.S. 95 North and proceed 45.30 miles to the town of Beatty.
(2:4) Follow U.S. 95 through Beatty (one right turn required). The entrance to Angel's Ladies is located on the west side of the road, just beyond the town limits, at the wrecked airplane (3.03 miles past the right turn). Proceed another 0.25 mile to the parking lot outside of the main building.

Notes: The "Southern (via Pahrump)" route is often better during "rush hours"; especially so if if you're staying at a hotel nearer to the south end of "The Strip", near McCarran airport, in Henderson, or elsewhere on the south side of metro Las Vegas. Also, this is the route to take if you want to make a side trip to the Pahrump-area brothels on your way to Beatty.

Special Note: Major Road Construction on Blue Diamond Road (NV 160) in southern metro Las Vegas:
W20-1NVDOT is currently in the process of reconstructing Blue Diamond Road (NV 160) between Las Vegas Boulevard South (NV 604) and Rainbow Boulevard (unsigned NV 595). This 4.375 mile section of highway is in the middle of being rebuilt from two to eight thru-travel lanes, the present at-grade crossing of the Union Pacific railroad mainline will soon be replaced with an overpass, the interchange with I-15 has now been totally rebuilt, and the eastern terminus of Blue Diamond at LVBS has been moved 4 blocks south of its original location to intersect at the Windmill Lane alignment. Though Phases 1 & 2A are now substantially complete (LVBS to Decatur Blvd), needless to say, major delays are to be expected in this area once the construction of Phase 2B (Decatur to Rainbow) gets underway. See the Las Vegas road project information page for more details.

How to get to Beatty from Southern California:
Special Note: CalTrans has (finally!) assigned, but for the most part has not yet modified signs to display, exit numbers for all its Interstate and other freeway off-ramps. Where indicated, I have noted these numbers in orange typeface if they do not yet appear on the appropriate "big green" roadside signs. Of course, they didn't install (even on completely new signs) the standard "exit tab plaques" (or E1-5 signs, as specified in the Standard Highway Signs regulations from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) as have almost all other states. No they just HAD to be different, didn't they? They put the info directly in the corners of their Interchange Advance Guide (E1-1 thru E1-4 series) and Interchange Exit Direction (E4-1) signs rather than doing it "by the book". Big surprise, given the fact they were the LAST state to even assign exit numbers.
Date I last checked CalTrans' website info: 2007/12/10

Special Note: Major Work Zones on Interstate 15 between Southern California and Las Vegas:
W20-1Beginning in 2002, I-15 was being upgraded to three thru-lanes in each direction between Victorville in Southern California and Nevada exit #27 in the southern Las Vegas metro area. This multi-year long project has been divided into several sections. CalTrans will handle the Victorville to Barstow, Barstow to Baker, and Baker to the California - Nevada state line segments, while NVDOT will tackle the remaining segment north of the state line. This is a high-priority undertaking (to the point that Nevada has actually agreed to fund some of the work in California), so expect some delays and one-lane traffic throughout these areas of I-15 periodically for the next several years.
